Histones

The entire DNA strand in a cell nucleus has a length of about two meters. In order to fit into the very small cell nucleus, the DNA thread has to be tightly wound up. Histones are the proteins around which the DNA is wound. In other words, histones assist in packaging the DNA in the cell nucleus. However, in order to read the information of the genes, the DNA molecule has to be unwound again.
