Steering Bodies

The Project Committee

The project committee is responsible for the internal scientific coordination of the NGFN. As an internal body its function is comparable to that of a management board. Among the essential tasks of the project committee are the coordination of research, the internal review of the scientific progress, and the coordination of the external presentation of the National Genome Research Network.

The composition of the project committee reflects the structure of the NGFN. The body consists of representatives of the systematic-methodical platforms, the five disease-oriented genome networks, and a representative for the explorative projects.

The spokespeople for the project committee are Professor Annemarie Poustka and Professor Stefan Schreiber.

The Disease-oriented Genome Networks are represented by

  • Professor Max Baur, Institute of Medical Biometry, Informatics and Epidemiology, University of Bonn (Genetic Epidemiology
  • Professor Walter Birchmeier, Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC), Berlin-Buch (Cancer-Net)
  • Professor Trinad Chakraborty, Institute for Medical Microbiology, University of Giessen (Infection-Net)
  • Professor Hugo Katus, Department of Medicine III, Medical University, Heidelberg (Cardiovascular-Net)
  • Professor Peter Propping, Institute of Human Genetics, University Bonn (Neuro-Net)
  • Professor Stefan Schreiber, Department of General Internal Medicine, Christian-Albrechts-University, Kiel (Environment-Net)

The Systematic Methodological Platforms are represented by:
  • Dr. Johannes Maurer, Resource Center and Primary Database (RZPD), Berlin
  • Professor Martin Hrabé de Angelis, National Research Center for Environment and Health (GSF), Neuherberg near Munich
  • Professor Werner Mewes, Research Center for Environment and Health (GSF), Neuherberg near Munich
  • Professor Annemarie Poustka, German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), Heidelberg
  • Professor Erich Wanker, Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch
  • Professor Hans Lehrach, Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics, Berlin

The Explorative Projects are represented by:
  • Professor Christoph Turck, Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry, Munichen

The External Steering Board

The external steering board has the function of an independent advisory board. It plays a key role in shaping the concepts with regard to content and in forming the strategic perspectives of the NGFN. The members of the board are prominent representatives from industry and academic research institutions. Service on the board is honorary.

The German Federal Ministry for Education and Research appointed the following members for the period from April 2004 to April 2007.

  • Dr. Andreas Barner, Boehringer Ingelheim GmbH, Ingelheim
  • Professor Gregor Eichele, Max Planck Institute for Experimental Endocrinology, Hannover
  • Professor Karl Einhäupl, Charité University Medical Center, Berlin
  • Dr. Timm Jessen, Scienamics GmbH, Kiel
  • Professor Wolff Schmiegel, Ruhr-University Bochum
  • Professor Bernd Seizinger, GPC Biotech AG, Munich
  • Professor Ruth Strasser, Technical University Dresden
  • Professor Günther Wess, Aventis Pharma Germany, Frankfurt

The chairman of the external steering board is Dr. Andreas Barner; the vice-chairman is Professor Ruth Strasser.
